Stéphanie Debette is Professor of Epidemiology/Public Health and Neurology (PU-PH) at University of Bordeaux (UB) and Bordeaux University Hospital (CHUBDX), she currently serves as director of the Bordeaux Population Health (BPH) research center (>500 staff members). Over >10 years she has led large collaborative genomic and epidemiological studies on stroke, cognitive traits, and imaging markers of brain aging, especially cerebral small vessel disease, aiming to decipher the molecular mechanisms of brain aging and to improve the prevention and treatment of stroke and dementia, leading to publications in top-tier journals (Nature, Nat Genet, Lancet Neurology, BMJ, etc). Prof. Debette has led a European Research Council grant until 2022 and serve as PI of the RHU SHIVA national investment for the future grant on cerebral small vessel disease (8.2M€). She has also coordinated the EU-JPND grant (BRIDGET, brain imaging genomics), is partner/co-PI on several European / international grants, and led the CADISP consortium on cervical artery dissections (leading cause of stroke in the young) since 2005. She serves in the research steering committee of the CHARGE consortium and was an elected chair of the International Stroke Genetics Consortium (ISGC, 2017-19). From 2018 to 2022 she served as vice-president for external relations at UB and was instrumental in establishing the ENLIGHT European University Alliance (inaugural chair of the board of directors, 2019-22). These responsibilities provided her with extensive and very diverse experience in coordinating large ambitious projects and initiatives at the national, European, and international level, including defining strategic directions, managing complex human resources, applying for diverse funding sources and interacting with leadership of international universities, institutes, companies, and diverse key opinion leaders and influencial personalities outside academia. A former Fulbright and Bettencourt-Schueller fellow, adjunct associate professor at Boston University, and visiting professor at Kyoto University, she was awarded the Claude Pompidou Foundation prize for dementia research, the scientific excellence award of the European Stroke Organization, and the National Order of Merit medal.
